Gay Marriage, let the People decide
In the past few weeks California’s Supreme court upheld proposition 8, and New Hampshire via their Governor’s signature made gay marriage the law, becoming the sixth state to do so. This is the way these things are supposed to be done, if the U.S. Constitution is silent on an issue that means the states decide.
Personally, I would rather the government stayed out of the marriage business all together. Unless children are involved, the state should be silent. The government has a substantial interest in children who will be the next generation as well as an obligation to protect minors who are not in a position to protect themselves. The government has an interest in encouraging parents to stay together for stability and when necessary decide custody issues in the child’s best interest. Where two consenting adults are involved they can presumably protect their own rights and should do so. In a contract detailing what they each expect from the relationship, what happens upon dissolution and who pays the court costs if necessary. If you want to go to your religious organization and have some sort of ceremony, call yourself married, fine with me. Just don’t involve my tax dollars unless children are involved.
Gay marriage, polygamy, regular old fashioned traditional, whatever relationship makes you happy is fine with me. Its your Life you should have the Liberty to pursue your Happiness, unless your happiness requires everyone else to except it. If a temple or church is forced to perform a ceremony against their teachings then it interferes with their rights. Teaching the Politically Correct view of gay marriage interferes with parents rights to raise their own children, and instil the values they believe are important. Have whatever relationship makes you happy but don’t demand that everyone else approve of it.
